Zwift Thoughts and Virtual Duathlon Series

Ok, so first, what is Zwift? Great question!

Zwift is an online gaming platform for cyclists, and recently runners as well. The more you ride, the more you unlock. You can also follow other athletes; train and race together.

A third party WTRL created a duathlon race series for Feb-March that I will participate in to try something new and get some early benchmarks of my fitness.

To prepare for the race I set up a Zwift account, made sure all my old skool bike equipment was compatible and also ordered a Zwift footpod to run with.

Here is my first impression with Zwift:

I am not in need of "virtual" motivation. I am pretty good with just hopping on the trainer and grinding out a workout or recovery ride if needed. I am using a very old faithful comptrainer. It is wheel on, not direct drive. So there is some power loss and wheel slip. I am using a laptop with Zwift and a TV for sharing a larger view or watch something else. Zwift rewards those that play the game more, faster wheels, bikes, other advantages. So I am switching over to Zwift for a few weeks to get some upgrades and workout the platform kinks before the race series.

The first race was Feb. 17, and if you follow the news you might remember we had a thing happen down here in Texas... It snowed, we lost power and water and racing was not at the top of my priority list. Plus I think the family appreciates me not working out for a few days while we could not shower.

2025 USATF Southwest Region Masters Indoor Championships - Masters Mile at UH - A New PR!

I’ve really enjoyed Masters racing over the past couple of years, so I was excited to hit the track again for the mile at the Yeoman Fieldhouse at UH. Coming into the race, I felt strong —training had been solid and consistent, and I was ready to see what I could do. I had a good warm-up : a couple of miles of jogging, some strides , dynamic stretches, and 4 x 150m ramp-ups to 4:50 pace to get the legs firing. Race Plan & Execution They ran the mile in two heats , and I was in the second. My goal was to go out at 4:58 pace , hold that through 1009m , and then kick it up a notch . Once I started hearing my splits, I knew I was just a touch off pace —but I didn’t panic. At 809m , I still felt in control and started gradually picking it up. Navigating Traffic & The Final Push I was getting back on track when I hit lapped traffic , which forced me to run most of the penultimate lap in Lane 2 —this ended up being my slowest lap . Despite that, I closed strong , crossing t...
